Alignments

A few of the options are for the block’s alignment, “Right”, “Center”, and “Left”. Choosing the right or left will allow you to place another block alongside the categories block; moreover, selecting the “Center” will return the block to its default, taking up the full width of the post or page content.

Clicking on the ⚙ cog icon next to the publish button will toggle the visibility of this panel.

Categories settings

The categories settings allow you to choose whether to display the categories as a drop-down, rather than the default bulleted list. You also have the choice to show the hierarchy and/or post counts.

  • Display As Dropdown — Choose this option to display the category list in a drop-down menu rather than as a list. This option might be useful in case you want to save space or have lots of categories to display.
  • Show Hierarchy — If you have parent and child categories (subcategories within main categories) you can choose to display the hierarchy or simply leave the list flat, without indicating which subcategories fit inside your main categories. You can show category hierarchies with both the list and drop-down menu formats.
  • Show Post Counts — If this option is chosen, the total number of published posts for that particular category will display next to the link. This option can be used with both the list and drop-down menu formats.

Advanced

The advanced tab lets you add a CSS class to your block, allowing you to write custom CSS and apply styles to the block as you see fit.
